Nutshell — Privacy Policy
The short version: Nutshell turns a photo or page of text into a short
summary entirely on your phone. Your photos, the text extracted from them, and the
summaries are never uploaded, never sent to us, and never shared — there is no account
and no server. The internet is used only for optional advertising, brief usage/crash
diagnostics, and a one-time download of the on-device AI model.
What stays on your device
- Images you capture or pick, extracted (OCR) text, and generated summaries are processed and stored only in Nutshell's private storage on your device. We have no server and cannot see them. Uninstalling the app removes them.
- On-device AI: summarization runs locally via Google's on-device model (ML Kit GenAI / Gemini Nano). Your text is not sent to a cloud service to be summarized.
What the app sends over the internet
- Ads (Google AdMob). Nutshell shows ads on its History screens and offers an optional "watch an ad" reward. To do this, the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects and shares your advertising ID and related device information with Google for advertising.
- Consent. Where required (e.g. the EEA/UK), a Google-provided consent form (UMP) asks your choice before personalized ads are used. You can change it any time in Settings → Ad privacy options.
- Usage and crash diagnostics (Firebase Analytics & Crashlytics). Nutshell uses Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand app usage and to detect and fix crashes. These send device, app-usage, and diagnostic information to Google on our behalf. They do not receive your photos, OCR text, or summaries — that content never leaves your device.
- Purchases (Google Play Billing). Buying Nutshell Pro or removing ads is processed entirely by Google Play. Nordic Node never sees your payment details — only that an entitlement was granted, which is stored locally on your device.
- Downloading the AI model. The first time you set up on-device AI, your device downloads the model from Google. This is a standard Android/Google Play system download; the content you summarize is not part of it.
Data we collect
None directly by us. Nutshell has no servers and no user accounts, so we never receive or store your photos, extracted text, or summaries. The data collection described above — advertising ID (AdMob) and usage/crash diagnostics (Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics) — is collected by Google's SDKs on our behalf, solely to run ads and to find and fix problems in the app.
Your choices
- Decline or change ad-personalization consent in Settings → Ad privacy options.
- Reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's Google settings.
- Remove ads entirely by purchasing Nutshell Pro.
- Delete any saved summary in the app; uninstalling removes all local data.
Children
Nutshell is not directed at children under 13 and uses advertising that relies on the advertising ID. It is intended for users 13 and older.
Changes
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date above will change. Material changes will be reflected in the app listing.
